hey friend 💌
i posted something on linkedin last week that took off more than i expected. it was a hot take on creative briefs that turned into a whole comment thread about a phrase i accidentally came up with and now i can't stop thinking about: structured freedom.
the idea is if you hand five creators a loose brief and just let them "cook" you don't get a test… you get five random variables thrown at the algorithm with a prayer. but lock down one thing you're actually testing like the core claim, the ad’s angle, and let them cook on everything around that? now you get native content AND clean data. the structure is exactly what makes the freedom usable.
and the more i sat with it, the more i realized it's not just a creative thing. it's a money thing. it's a life thing. the right kinda constraints is what sets you free.
so that's today's issue. structured freedom, in two flavors:
💸 the money routine that frees you from spiraling
📱 the brief framework behind better-performing ads (with receipts)
let's go ↓
📱the brief secret: lock the variable, let em cook
the structured-freedom thing shows up hardest in creative briefs, and it's the difference between a test you can learn from and a pile of content you can't.
here's the trap: a brief so loose that five creators run five completely different directions feels like freedom. but if one of those ads crushes, you have no idea which element drove it, so then you can't repeat it. you didn't run a test, you really ran a vibe.
the fix is structured freedom. lock down the core variable (the one claim or angle you're actually measuring) and give creators total room to perform on everything else. it’s native-looking content for them, but a clean signal for you. (a sharp stranger on linkedin put it far better than i could: the creative team gets their sandbox, the media buyer gets a clean read. win-win.)
and this is bigger than one brief, it's where the whole industry is headed. the brands actually winning with UGC right now treat it as a system, not a campaign: structure (sourcing, rights, a clean testing setup) wrapped around spontaneity (real people, native content). campaigns create spikes; systems compound.
the rest of how the sausage gets made, fast:
iSpy before iCreate. even bad existing ads tell you what not to do. no comps? go adjacent.
ai is a second brain, not a strategist. it doesn't hand you the answer! it catches what you miss and turns 40 messy thoughts into structure. (my unhinged-but-undefeated move: turn the mic on and word-vomit.)
the one prompt that runs everything: "what am i missing?"
🎁 the freebie: i also built the teague media hook vault this week with 50 fill-in-the-blank hook frameworks for ads, carousels + reels. the "inspo starting point" version, not a copy-paste script. reply "VAULT" and i'll send it your way 🎀
💸 savvie tip of the week: your money routine checklist (no spiraling, no shame)
most money advice starts with a number. but almost nobody asks the question underneath all of it: how do i want to feel when i open my banking app?
calm? proud? in control? like a person who's got it all handled? name that first, because "i want $10k saved" and "i want to stop bracing for impact every time i check my balance" are two very different goals, and the second one is the real one you gotta master before getting to the first.
the thing that gets you to calm isn't gonna be a perfect spreadsheet or white-knuckle discipline. it's a small, fixed routine that frees you from having to think about it. the structure does the worrying so you don't have to.
here's the one i posted on @withsavvie this week 👇
no spiraling + no shame allowed. just small steps that add up over time. which one's first for you? 🤍

trend: funky text-wall shapes! the chunky, shaped block-of-text look👇
cheap to make, easy to test. good one to steal this week.
tool: ChatGPT Go is $8/mo in the US (it's even cheaper in some markets abroad). a nice middle tier if you want more usage than the free plan without jumping to a $20 subscription. heads up it's ad-supported in the US now, but the image generation has fr leveled up.
quote: structured freedom is the perfect term for it." — a stranger on linkedin who got it immediately. the comment thread that started the whole idea is right here.
totally random: it's father's day weekend and i'm writing this from up in the mountains with my whole family. sending love to all the dads and to anyone for whom this weekend is a complicated one. 🤍

📋 your homework
pick one:
💸 money: run the checklist once this week. start with "just look."
📱 content: in your next brief, lock the one variable you're testing - then let the creators cook on everything else.
☕ fun: log off and be a person this weekend. the work will still be there monday.
made it this far? that’s all for this week.
the takeaway, in one line: a constraint isn't the enemy of the good stuff - it's what makes the good stuff usable. lock your one variable, in your ads and in your money, and let the rest cook.
go make something this week :)
xo,
callie 🤍
p.s. reply and tell me one variable you're locking down this week - creative, financial, or otherwise. i read every single one.
forward to a friend who needs the reminder that the constraint will set em free <3
